Abstract
705,545. Aerials. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FILS. June 26, 1952 July 3, 1951], No. 16145/52. Class 40 (7) An ultra-short-wave aerial comprises a rectangular waveguide terminating in an open end but having one wall extended by a flat metal plate 2 upon which is arranged a uniform layer 3 of dielectric material which penetrates into the waveguide in the form of a wedge-shaped member 4. Subject to the thickness a of the layer 3 exceeding a certain minimum value, energy propagated along the guide will continue within the dielectric layer and will be radiated from its rectangular end wall. The radiating aperture may thus be less than a half-wavelength high allowing it to be arranged conveniently upon the wing of an aircraft. In order to ensure a plane wavefront at the radiating aperture suitably arranged holes, which operate to advance the waves passing through them, may be pierced vertically throughout the dielectric layer.
