Abstract
670,001. Aerials. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Nov. 15, 1948 [Nov. 13, 1947], No. 29635/48. Class 40 (vii). A highly directive antenna for mounting on a conductive area 11, which may be the skin of an aircraft, comprises a line of metallic flaps 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 attached at one edge of the conductive area and tilted up at a small angle #. The wedge-shaped openings at the ends of the flaps are closed by conductive walls 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35 which may be integral with the flaps or separate triangles soldered or welded thereto. Only one end wall of each wedge unit is shown as Fig. 2 is a part sectional view along the centre-line 2-2 of Fig. 3 (not shown). Each flap is about 0.34# wide and 3/4 # long and the overlap is such as to give a free surface of width #/4. The flap 22 is energized by a transmission line having its inner conductor 16 connected to the inner surface of the flap and its sheath 17 connected to the sheet 11. Flap 21 acts as a reflector and flaps 23, 24, 25 as directors, being parasitically energized on tuning by means of capacitor discs 41 attached to threaded screws 42. A stream-lining and protective cover 50 of insulating material is fitted over the whole assemby, one of which may be fitted on each side of an aircraft nose to provide overlapping beams as in Fig. 1 (not shown), for radio homing purposes.
