Abstract
570,038. Wave guides ; directive wireless systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CLAYTON. R. J. Jan. 7, 1942, No. 248. [Class 40 (v)] Short-wave energy is fed from an oscillator to a directive radiator and reflector by a wave guide of which the dielectric medium has a permittivity much greater than that of air. As shown the straight cylindrical guide 2 passes through the back of a parabolic reflector 1, and an aerial consisting of a metal rod 3 is passed through a diametral hole near the free end of the guide. The guide may, if desired, be provided with a metal sheath, and the dielectric permittivity may be as high as 80. This permits the use of a guide of small diameter, e.g. the diameter may be 1.5 cm. for a wave-length of 15 cm. In Fig. 2, the open end of the wave guide constitutes the radiator, and a plate 5 placed in front of the guide reflects the radiation into the reflector 1. One or more enlarged transition sections 4, a quarter-wave long, may be inserted at the open end of the guide, and filled with media whose permittivities decrease towards the open end.
