Abstract
867,356. Aerials. HERSCH, W. June 16, 1958, No. 19231/58. Class 40(7) An end-fire aerial system comprises a radiating element consisting of a metallic rod or tube coated externally with dielectric material and having a wave launching or collecting means associated with one end thereof. As shown in Fig. 1 a metal tube 1 is provided with a dielectric coating 2 and the launching means consists of dipole elements 3 supported in insulating bushings 4 and coupled to feeder 7. A reflecting piston 6 prevents energy from travelling along the inside of the tube 1 and reflector elements 5 prevent back radiation. Instead of a wire feeder 7 an extension of the tube 1 can be used as a circular waveguide feeder. In another embodiment also using a waveguide feeder 12 the aerial consists of a metal rod 9 provided with a dielectric coating. A shaped mode convertor 11 consisting of an extension of the dielectric rod coating converts from the H 01 mode in the circular guide 12 to the HE 11 mode along the aerial. Discontinuites, such as the grooves 15, may be formed in the aerial dielectric to increase the gain. The same effect may be achieved by tapering the dielectric material or reducing its thickness in steps.
