Abstract

778,518. Aerials. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 13, 1956 ]Jan. 20, 1955], No. 1298/56. Class 40(7) An antenna, particularly for use mounted on an aircraft, consists of an elongated dielectric former 10 having a flattened oval cross-section round which a ribbon 12 of conductor is spirally wound. The lower end of the conductor is connected to an intermediate point on a hair-pin shaped inductor 15, arranged at the base of the former, by a wire 18. The inductor is part of a parallel tuned circuit which includes a capacitor 17 mounted across the. ends'of the "hair-pin" 15 in adjustment slots 16. The, co-axial feeder 20 for the aerial is coupled with its inner conductor 19 joined to a further point on the inductor and its outer to the earthy side of the capacitor and inductor. The earthy side of the tuned circuit is also coupled to the aircraft skin (the support bracket doing this is indicated close to the connection point of wire 18 in Fig. 2). The ribbon aerial element is overcoupled to the tuned circuit and the combination is capable of working over a wide frequency range. The direct path from the element to earth protects the antenna against lightening. The antenna may be coated with dielectric material or covered with a streamlined dielectric housing.
