Abstract

744,119. Aerials. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 21, 1954 [Dec. 30, 1953], No. 36226/53. Class 40 (7). A counterpoise earth arrangement for use with an unbalanced aerial feeder system consists of a conductive loop 4 surrounding the feeder and a single substantially straight conductive member 6 connecting the loop to the side of the feeder 3 not connected to the aerial. In the embodiment shown the transmission line feeder is a coaxial one and has its inner conductor 2 connected to the unipole aerial 1 and the counterpoise attached to its outer conductor. The configuration of the loop is preferably circular, the circle being in a plane at right angles to the transmission line. The circumference of the loop 4 plus the length of member 6 is made half a wavelength at the mid-frequency of operation. The transmission line impedance may be matched to that of the aerial by adjusting the point of attachment of the member 6 to the outer conductor 5. If necessary the conductor 5 may be extended by a single wire conductor arranged parallel to the aerial 1 and the member 6 attached thereto. The loop may be distorted out of the circular and need not exactly lie in a plane at right angles to the aerial axis. If the length of the aerial differs from a quarter wavelength the total counterpoise length as specified above should be arranged to be twice the aerial length.
