Abstract

609,993. Aerials. HAZELTINE CORPORATION. March 27, 1946, No. 9520. Convention date, March 30, 1945. [Class 40 (vii)] An aerial element for wideband operation comprises an elongated conductor of diamond shape, of length l 3# 5# between - and -, of maxi- 8 mum width w between one-quarter and one-half the length, and of maximum thickness t much less than the greatest width. Four such elements 10-13 as shown in Fig. 2 are mounted on a rectangular conduit 14 by conducting supports 15, approximately #/4 long, to form an array, Fig. 1 and 3. The array is fed by a coaxial line 20, 21, the outer conductor of which is divided by slots into portions 20a, 20b, to form a balance -to -unbalance transformer, the inner conductor being connected to section 20b by the conducting stud 25. Elements 11, 13 are fed, at points a distance d from the excited end selected to provide the required impedance match, by conduotors 28 from section 20a. Elements 10, 12 are similarly fed by conductors 29 from section 20b. The array is enclosed in a housing 35 of circular cross-section, constructed of plywood or suitable plastic material and supported from the conduit 14 by end plates. A single diamond-shaped conductor may be used as a radiator and may be enclosed in a streamlined casing for use on an aircraft, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The element is end-fed through suitable matching sections from a coaxial line, the outer conductor of which is connected to a ground plane forming the base of the casing. A number of diamondshaped elements may be serially connected to form a wide-band V-type aerial, Fig. 6 (not shown), or four coplanar diamond-shaped conductors may be arranged to form a loop structure, Fig. 7 (not shown), opposite pairs being connected in parallel to each conductor of the feeder.
