Abstract

<PICT:0597832/III/1> Radiation for physiological treatment purposes is generated by a microwave source mounted in a tube fitted with adjustable ends for tuning and control of the wavelength of the beam discharged towards the object to be treated, a reflecting surface being positioned on the remote side of the treated object to reflect the beam back into the object. The source 19 is mounted in tube 18 which is fitted with frustro-conical ends 20, 25 longitudinally adjustable by devices 22, 27. The conical sections are stated to separate the undesired longer wavelengths from the desired microwaves. Section 20 is terminated by a tubular member 21 and tuning piston 24 while section 25 has an orifice 26 through which the radiation passes. A tubular extension 28 supports a slide holder 29, into which slides having regulated orifices may be inserted, and a telescopic tube 30, 31, carrying further telescopic extensions 33, 35 of enlarged diameter, is attached to the slide holder. A reflector 37 reflects back waves which pass through the subject 34. It is stated that the emitted radiation may be polarized in a particular plane by the action of the orifice 26. Simpler forms of the apparatus, not employing the frustro-conical sections, are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown).
