Abstract
654,648. Magnetrons. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. April 18, 1947, No. 10371. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] In a magnetron having an anode structure defining a plurality of cavity resonators 14, Fig. 2, alternate and intermediate anode segments are strapped together by ring straps 29, 30, which pass through U- shaped grooves 31 in the anode segments so as to be partially surrounded thereby. The straps 29, 30 of copper or silver and those neighbouring portions to which the straps are not connected form sections of twoconductor transmission line and the dimensions of the grooves and straps are chosen to make the impedance of the line sections approximately a minimum, e.g. the groove depth and width are each about three times the corresponding cross-sectional dimensions of the straps. This ratio may be slightly varied in particular cases so as to compensate for variations in the sizes of the resonators and of the slots connecting the resonators with the cathode space. Each strap 29, 30 has tabs 34, Fig. 4, fitting into grooves 33 and the tabs 34 are fastened in place by a staking tool 35 which is driven into the anode structure to force parts of the anode against the tabs. The straps are preferably not complete rings but are broken, the breaks in the two straps occurring at either side of the plane containing the cathode lead-in conductors 7, 8 and approximately diametrically opposite the output coupling loop 25. Alternatively, one strap only may be broken. The cathode 6 is indirectly heated and has end shields 7<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>1</SP> to prevent escape of electrons towards the copper end caps 2, 3. A conducting pipe (not shown) may be attached to the member 28 to form with the wire 26 an output coaxial line. Specifications 588,185, 588,916, 590,546 and 592,348 are referred to.
