Abstract
777,140. Discharge apparatus. M-O. VALVE CO., Ltd., and WINDSOR, L. R. E. Oct. 28, 1955 [Oct. 29, 1954], No. 31355/54. Class 39(1). Radiation focused from a high temperature source is utilized to make a seal. The glass bulb 1 of a tube which is to be sealed to the base 3 has a coating 2 of absorptive material, such as graphite, on the part where the seal is to be made. Radiant energy from an arc 5 operating at a colour temperature of about 5000‹K is focused by a reflector 6 on to the coating 2 ; a sufficient temperature to effect sealing (about 850‹C.) is produced, the tube being rotated for uniform heating. Exhaust tubes may be sealed off similarly.
