Refinements introduced in a method of continuously operating a high power mercury vapor lamp in a closed room, said lamp having an elongated quartz shell, hermetically sealed at each end; whose improvements include the operations of: connecting each closed end of said lamp to a thermally conductive heat sink; keeping said heat sink at a temperature below 100ºC; and locating said heat sink in such physical proximity to the welded ends of said quartz shell that the temperature of the weld is kept below 400ºC.
