Abstract

1525403 Discharge lamps UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 34884/75 Heading H1D A mercury vapour lamp 10 for generating ultra-violet light comprises a quartz envelope housing tungsten electrodes 18, 20 which are sealed through the envelope by molybdenum strips to connect with supply conductors 22, 26 which are in electrical and thermal contact with respective heat sinks 12, 14, and wherein the A.C. supply source 62 is connected across the heat sinks and each heat sink has an arrangement for passing cooling liquid, e.g. water, therethrough such that the liquid does not contact the envelope. The arrangement is such that with the temperature of the heat sinks being maintained below 100‹ C., the temperature of the molubdenum strips is maintained below 400‹ C. As shown, the heat sinks 12, 14, of copper or aluminium, are formed as two blocks 50, 52 bolted together to electrically contact respective conductors 22, 26. The sealed ends of the lamp, e.g. in the form of pinch seals, may be encapsulated in ceramic material or provided with metallic caps. A number of Hg vapour lamps so cooled may be used in a photocuring apparatus provided with a controlled inert atmosphere above the surface being irradiated, Fig. 4 (not shown).
