Abstract

<PICT:0952939/C1/1> In an incandescent electric lamp having a tungsten filament within a quartz envelope containing iodine, the internal surface of the envelope lying between the two planes at right-angles to the envelope axis between which the filament extends is so small in relation to the dimensions and effective resistance of the filament that for at least one value of the wattage dissipated in the filament such that the filament temperature is in the range 3100-3350 DEG K., the envelope loading is in the range 50-150 watts per square centimetre. In one form, the envelope 5 is closed at the ends by beads 7 of high silicon glass through which rods 6 of tungsten are sealed, the filament 10 extending between the rods. The seals at the ends of the tube may consist of one or more glasses, the coefficient of thermal expansion of each of the glasses being intermediate between those of the members (i.e. quartz, tungsten or another glass) to which they are sealed on either side.
