Abstract

1,231,141. Lamp seal. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 6 Jan., 1969 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 793/69. Heading C1M. A short-arc lamp comprises a central bulbous quartz envelope portion 12 and a pair of opposite quartz arms 16 (only one shown); an electrode 14 mounted at one end of the arm and a lead-in conductor 22 mounted at the other, the electrode and lead-in conductor being connected by ribbon conductors 26 (e.g. of Mo); and a vitreous sealing composition 40 surrounding the juncture of the lead-in conductor and the ribbon conductors, the said sealing composition having a coefficient of thermal expansion equal to or less than that of quartz. The sealing composition may be a lithium-aluminium-silicate powder and a binder, the binder being preferably platinum paint, sodium silicate, potassium silicate or nitrocellulose. The ribbon conductors 26 include end sections 28, an intermediate section 30 and connecting flap 32 all sealed initially between a quartz tube 18 and centre member 20.
