Abstract

1301966 Electric lamps GTE SYLVANIA Inc 12 Aug 1971 [19 Aug 1970] 37964/71 Heading H1F [Also in Division C1] In an electric lamp having a high-silica glass envelope closed by a press seal having a molybdenum ribbon embedded therein and a molybdenum lead-in wire connected to the ribbon within the seal and wherein the lead-in wire protrudes outwardly from the seal, the lead-in wire has a coating of molybdenum aluminide. The aluminide coating prevents oxidation of the lead-in wire because the aluminium is converted to aluminium oxide. The coating is formed on the wires by packing a mixture of aluminium powder, silica and sodium fluoride around the wires and heating them in hydrogen at 1900‹ F. for 2 hours. The interstitial passages of the press seal are sealed-off using soft glass (8, the Figure, not shown). Although the specific embodiment relates to a halogen tungsten-filament lamp, the leads of I.R. heating lamps and arc discharge lamps may be similarly treated. Double or single-ended lamps may be treated.
