Abstract
1,207,221. Pinch seals in vitreous envelopes. GENERAL ELECTRIC and ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [31 Jan., 1968], No. 5008/68. Heading C1M. A molybdenum foil pinch seal is made by joining one end of a strip of Mo foil to a conductor (the outer conductor), cleaning the surfaces of at least the mutually adjacent end portions of foil and conductor to remove any oxide film, forming a coating of an aluminoboro-silicate glass on the cleaned surfaces, the glass having a coefficient of thermal expansion closely matching that of the vitreous material which is to form the pinch, and heating to form a glaze, simultaneously or subsequently pinching a tube of fused SiO 2 or high SiO 2 - content glass (i.e. at least 90 wt. per cent of SiO 2 ) over the foil/conductor assembly at an elevated temperature (e.g. 2000‹ C.) so that the glazed portions are embedded in the pinch. The other end of the foil may be connected to an inner conductor, either before or after glazing the foil. The inner and outer conductors may be of Mo or W. Suitable glasses for the glaze and for the vitreous pinch material are given. The glass may be applied by applying glass powder of particle size not more than 10 microns to the foil and conductor, and heating at, preferably, above 1200‹ C. to fuse the glass. Preferably a non-oxidizing, e.g. hydrogen, atmosphere is used. The powder is preferably applied in a suspension in a hydroxylcontaining liquid, e.g. H 2 O, MeOH, at pH about 2 so as to form a coating not thicker than 1/1000 of an inch. The pinch seals formed may be formed in producing an incandescent lamp or an electric discharge tube, for example. The Mo foil and conductor may be cleaned by electrolysis in an alkaline solution (e.g. 30% w/v NaOH solution) followed by washing in distilled water.
