Abstract

1453943 Glass-metal seals; glass compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 18 Dec 1973 [18 Dec 1972] 58587/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] A method of making a tungsten-halogen lamp having an envelope made of aluminosilicate glass which is rounded at one end and has refractory metal lead-in wires and an exhaust tube sealed into the other end is characterized in that a refractory metal spiral is positioned inside the exhaust tube in the region of the seal to keep the tube open during the sealing operation. The spiral which is preferably made of tungsten, is introduced into the tube prior to the assembly of the lamp and is held in position by lightly heating the tube until some of the glass of the tube flows between the turns of the spiral. The aluminosilicate glass comprises between 59% and 70% by weight of SiO 2 , between 10% and 20% of Al 2 O 3 and between 7À4% and 28% of BaO, the preferred composition being as follows: 62À0% by weight of SiO 2 17À2% " " " Al 2 O 3 19.0% " " " BaO 1À5% " " " CaO trace of ZrO 2 trace of TiO and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glass is substantially the same as that of the lead-in wires, which are made of molybdenum or tungsten, so that no foliated sections of lead-in wire are required in the seal which can consequently be small. A preferred fill gas for the lamp has the following composition: 98À95% by volume of Kr 0À05% " " " O 2 1À00% " " " CH 3 I the methyl iodide being cracked after the lamp has been sealed by applying an arc between the lead-in wires and an external semicircular probe in the vicinity of the seal.
