Abstract
1428958 Sealing glass to glass and to metal THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56839/72 Heading C1M A bulb 12 with a vitreous tubulation 13, through which the. bulb is filled to a pressure at or above atmospheric pressure, is provided with a solid vitreous bead 16 having a lower melting point and a higher infra-red absorption than the vitreous tubulation 13 located within the tubulation, the bead 16 and tubulation 13 being fused together by infra-red radiation 20 through the wall of the tubulation. The bead 16 may be of hard or soft glass or of quartz and of different composition or the same as for the tubulation, with the addition of a metallic oxide such as ferrous oxide. The bulb 12, which may be of glass or of metal, is first sealed to the tubulation 13 to enclose a filament assembly 10 with lead wires 14 and the bead 16. A constriction 15 is then formed in the tubulation 13 and the bulb inverted so that the bead 16 rests on the construction 15, to which it is then sealed. The radiation 20 may be from a carbon arc lamp or a laser such as a neodymium solid state laser.
