Abstract
724,290. Discharge apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 10, 1953 [Feb. 16, 1952], No. 3755/53. Addition to 697,922. Class 39 (1). In sealing together parts of an evacuated envelope by a method such as that described in the parent Specification, in which the envelope parts are machined to fit closely together, coated with a suitable material, the meeting surfaces polished to an optical finish, and then heated to cause molecular diffusion to occur in said materials and thus form the joint, the whole operation is carried out in an' outer evacuated chamber. In Fig. 1, L, K, N are the walls of a bell evacuated through a tube Q. The meeting surfaces of the two envelope parts A, B are prepared as described in the parent Specification, and the upper part B is held in a chuck E which can be moved downwards by a screw and bellows device F, G. A heating coil H is used to degas the electrodes, and finally to perform the sealing operation. A thermocouple i measures the temperature.
