Abstract

634,326. Glass manufacture. HOLMAN, H. E., and PEARCE, R. R. July 2, 1947, No. 17405. [Class 56] A glass window, such as a cathode-ray tube screen, is pressed to its predetermined shape after it has been fused into position in the surrounding part of an envelope. As shown, a flat glass end wall 1, with parallel highly polished surfaces, is fused to the glass bulb 2 of the tube which is then mounted vertically over a steel mould 4 having a cavity 5 of the required shape, an annular retaining sleeve 6 closely fitting the bulb 2, and a recess 7 for accurate location relative to the bulb support ; heat is applied to the wall 1, e.g. by radial gas burners, and to the mould 4, by further burners or in a furnace, and after the tube has been lowered on to the mould compressed air &c. is blown in through a tube 8 to press the wall 1 into contact with the cavity 5 ; the tube is removed from the mould after cooling. The accurate internal protrusions on a cathode-ray tube envelope as described in Specifications 507,840 and 575,027, [both in Group XL], may be used to locate the envelope on a hollow internal mandrel aligned with the mould 4 and through which the compressed air &c. is injected, a rubber gasket on the mandrel being pressed against the open end of the bulb 2 ; alternatively the envelope may have external locating surfaces, coaxial with the internal protrusions, by which it is clamped in alignment with the mould.
