Abstract

670,411. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 1, 1947 [June 20, 1946], No. 18539/46. Class 39 (i). The neck of a cathode-ray tube having one end of the neck formed of a tubular glass part of relatively low coefficient of expansion and the other formed of a tubular glass part of relatively high coefficient of expansion for sealing to the pinch is formed by interposing between these parts at least one ring shaped part of glass having an intermediate coefficient of expansion, and simultaneously fusing together the axially facing edges of the parts in a single fusing operation. In an example the leads for connection to the electrodes are made from a Fe/Ni/Co alloy such as " Kovar " (Registered Trade Mark) and sealed into a pinch of soft glass such as Chance's G.S.3, the envelope being of hard glass such as " Pyrex" " (Registered Trade Mark), and the pinch sealed to a tubular part of sealing glass such as G.S.3 with two intermediate glasses, namely B.T.H. C11 and " Intasil " (Registered Trade Mark), arranged between the sealing glass and the envelope. These borosilicate glasses have coefficients of expansion approximately as follows: Pyrex 33-35Î10<SP>-7</SP>, Intasil 36-40x10<SP>-7</SP>, C11 43-47x10<SP>-7</SP>, and G.S.3 47-49 x 10<SP>-7</SP>. The envelope is assembled on the headstock of a lathe, and a mandrel with the intermediate glass parts and the, sealing glass part, of corresponding diameter to the envelope neck, assembled in correct order is inserted in the tailstock. The mandrel, which may be fluted or relieved, may consist of hard carbon, heat-resisting steel, or "Meehanite" (Registered Trade Mark), and preferably does not rotate with the tailstock. The glass rings are now brought into contact with one another, and with the edge of the envelope neck and fused together, the flame being directed against Intasil and Pyrex, and the shape maintained by internal pressure and external tooling. The pinch may then be sealed to the sealing glass part. Specification 670,430 is referred to.
