Abstract
830,762. Lamp envelopes. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 8, 1957, No. 34892/57. Class 56. A lamp envelope is produced by bonding an end of an elongated vitreous member to a vitreous plate member substantially centrally thereof, simultaneously heating at least said plate member and shaping said plate member into a cup-like member 1 with the elongated member extending in a direction opposite the opening of the cup-like member, reproducing said cup-like member to provide a complementary cup-like member 3, and bonding the rims 19, 20 to each other to form an envelope from which said elongated members may be removed as shown at lines 21 and 22, Fig. 7. The elongated member may be a tube 8 or a rod 15 which may be fused into an aperture 7, 17 substantially centrally of the plate member 6, 18 respectively, or to a plate member 24 which is then pierced to produce opening 26 Figs. 3, 7, 8 and 9. The plate member may be shaped into a cup-like member using tool 11 and mandrel 10, Fig. 4. Fig. 10 illustrates a non-spherical envelope composed of sections 30 and 31 having walls of varying thickness sealed at 32, having necks 33, 34 of different diameters. The vitreous material may be fused silica.
