Abstract
639,210. Uniting metals to vitreous materials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., NELSON, E. H., and POWER, E. B. May 1, 1947, No. 11734. [Class 36] [Also in Group XL (a)] A seal for a tungsten rod 1, Fig. 1, in a highpressure metal vapour discharge lamp comprises a button of intermediate glass having a sleeve 2 and a dished flange 3 joined to a re-entrant expanded end 4 of the quartz tube 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the dished flange 3 is joined to a non-re-entrant expanded end 4 of the tube 5. The space between the expanded end 4 of the tube 5 and the rod 1 is filled with powdered silicon, alumina or zirconia to restrict the amount of metal vapour filling of the lamp condensing therein.
