Abstract
554,330. Uniting metal to vitreous material. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 27, 1942, No. 10464. Convention date, July 29, 1941. [Class 36] A glass bead seal for electric lamps or discharge tubes is so contoured that the radial stresses at the ends of the bead are uniform and relatively low. The tungsten wire W, Fig. 1, has a bead with a main part B many times thicker than the wire and ends E having a thickness of the same general order as the wire, so producing a stress diagram as shown in Fig. 2. The ends E may be in length from two to five times the thickness of the wire and have an overall thickness two or three times that of the wire. The main part B may be spherical, Fig. 5, for sealing into the quartz wall 20.
