[Class 39 (i)] The vitreous envelopes of high pressure metal vapour discharge devices are strengthened by applying molten vitreous material and allowing it to harden. The applied vitreous material may be the same as or different from the material of the envelope and in the latter case has a slightly higher temperature co-efficient of expansion than the material of which the envelope is mainly composed, and may be applied around the lead-in seals after they have been completed, or around the sealing-off pip either before or after sealing. The strengthening means may also be applied in the form of bands around the envelope, particularly if it is tubular.
