Abstract

658,227. Quartz to metal seals. 'BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 25, 1919, No. 19521. Convention date, July 29, 1948. [Class 36] [Also in Group XL (a)] A stem for a high-pressure electric discharge device comprises a vitreous tube 1 containing a conductor rod 2 and a metal thimble 4 which are hermetically united, the thimble having a feathered edge 5 which is embedded in the wall of tube 1, and a spacer 6 within the thimble having a cylindrical outer surface engaging and supporting the inner wall of the thimble. The spacer 6 also has an inwardly projecting flange 8 disposed around the rod 2 to limit the flow of plastic vitreous material into the thimble during the sealing process. The rod 2 may be of tungsten and the thimble 4 of molybdenum, and the outer surfaces of both may be wrapped in molybdenum foil 9. The tube 1 is preferably of quartz.
