Abstract

644,635. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 7, 1947, No. 17856. [Class 39 (i)] A thermionic valve, particularly a miniature diode for high-frequency use, comprises an anode 1 forming a metallic tubular envelope for the valve and an indirectly heated cathode comprising a cathode sleeve 7 surrounding a heater 15 and a getter 14, the envelope being sealed at one end by a glass bead 3 through which pass leads to the cathode and heater and at the other end by constriction of a metal exhaust tube 5 integral with the anode. Insulators 8, 9 are provided within the envelope to locate the cathode and are shaped either to receive the cathode, Fig. 3 (not shown), or to project into the cathode; they are provided with notches 10 through which the electrode leads extend and through which gases may pass. The getter may be of zirconium, tantalum or the like, and may be coated on the inner wall of the cathode sleeve or may be in the form of a wire 14 which may be used as the cathode leadin. The heater wire 15 and getter 14 may be cemented inside the cathode sleeve with an insulating cement such as alumina. The anode tube may be flared out at one end 2 to receive the glass bead 3 and may be glazed internally before sealing. The anode tube may be finally coated with plastic or other insulating means. Specification 549,832 is referred to.
