Abstract
573,572. Discharge apparatus. FERRANTI, Ltd., CHILCOT, A. L., JACKSON, S., and TAYLOR, F. W. April 18, 1942, No. 5203. [Class 39 (i)] A diode has an envelope formed of two cups a, a <1>, each of which has a set of protuberances e, e<1> formed therein by local heating of the glass tube, while a jig is in the interior of each cup. Other jigs are. used to fix the anode f in one cup and the cathode l in the other, the cathode resting on the protrusions in the finished envelope when the two cups are sealed together. The jig and cathode are prevented from tilting during fixing in the cups. The position of the anode is determined by the protuberances in its tube part. More than one set of protuberances may be formed in each cup or the protuberances may have recesses to determine the axial positions of jigs and cathode. The cathode need not be cylindrical the anode may be asymmetrically disposed ; the anode may surround the cathode. The protuberances may be formed of glass beads fused into the envelope ; this may have a gas filling. Exhausting and activation of the tube may be effected as described in Specification 573,570.
