Abstract
732,853. Discharge apparatus. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Feb. 19, 1953 [Feb. 26, 1952], No. 4732/53. Class 39 (1). A method of sealing envelope parts A and B together consists of coating them at least in part with a glaze or enamel a, b, of lower melting point than the envelope parts, grinding the coated surfaces so that they fit together closely, and then fusing the coatings together to form a vacuum-tight seal. The method can be used to seal unlike materials together, such asglass, ceramic, or metal; and the sealing surfaces may be flat or curved. The abutting ground surfaces will themselves retain a degree of vacuum, and the seals, as applied to discharge tubes or cathode-ray tubes, may be made by placing the envelope parts together, and evacuating the tube as part of the ordinary processing sequences carried out on a rotary machine; the actual seal is made as the tube indexes through the oven. In Fig. 8, the enamel seal a, b is wholly within the thickwalled envelope parts A, B.
