Abstract

737,162. Glass-metal seals. CINEMATELEVISION, Ltd. Feb. 22, 1952 [Feb. 22, 1951], No. 4304/51. Class 36. [Also in Group XL (a)] A method of cementing together component members of the envelope of an electron discharge tube such as a C.R.T., one of which at least is non-metallic, consists in assembling the members in their correct relative positions and wiping on at the region of contact of the members metal solder having a melting-point of about 120‹ C., e.g. " Cerroseal," of the kind which wets and adheres strongly to the materials of which the members are formed so that a vacuum-tight seal is obtained. The component members may have different coefficients of expansion and can be quartz and glass, metal and glass, or ceramic material and metal or glass. The glass can be a borosilicate glass and the metal nickel, copper, stainless steel or alloys known under the Registered Trade Marks " Eureka " and " Nichrome." The members forming the envelope are baked in vacuum before the cementing operation and those portions of the members which are distant from the region of contact are baked or flame-torched after the cementing operation and during the final evacuation of the envelope.
