Abstract
653,886. Electric discharge devices. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 16, 1948, No. 24324. [Class 39 (i)] In a gas-discharge device having an envelope of metal sealed to glass-the metal is coated internally with a substance which will not oxidize at temperatures below 500‹ to 600‹ C. The invention is described with particular reference to the manufacture of a cathode-ray tube, the metal part being of frusto-conical shape having a glass wall fused to the wider end and a glass stem to the narrower. The envelope may be formed of mild steel although nickel-iron, chrome-iron, or nickel or copper alloys may be used. The coating may be of chromium rhodium or vitreous enamels ; the chromium for example being deposited electrically and the vitreous enamel sprayed and then fired to harden.
