Abstract
698,876. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. DELANY, B. P., and COPELAND, P. L. Feb. 20, 1950, No. 4303/50. Class 39(i) A liquid-cathode discharge de vice comprises a member, or a pan of the container, which is enlargec at the end remote from the cathode is in contact with the cathode and is provided with or carries a conductor or semi-conductor in contact with the pool and provided with a connecting member. A lamp or rectifier, may have a mercury or caesium cathode 3 and a glass envelope to which is sealed the glass funnel 4 coated internally with metal or silicon or silicor carbide 9 to which is connected the leading-in wire 10. The connectior may be effected at one point or through a spiral, which may be partly embedded in the funnel, and the coating may be extended intc the flared part 5. Starting is effected by connecting the wire 10 to a source of positive potential; in the case of a rectifier it may be connected to the anode either externally or through a resistance arranged within the envelope, or the starting potential may have a predetermined phase relationship to the anode voltage. Voltage and currents are specified. The funnel 5 may consist of an uncoated silicon conical member which fits tightly within the envelope. In another form, the conical end 21 of the tube carries an internal metal film which is connected to the anode through an internal resistance. Specification 698,875 is referred to.
