Abstract
521,763. Metal vapour converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PRINZ, D. G. Nov. 25, 1938, No. 34375. [Class 39 (i)] Ignition is effected by means of a pool 3 spatially separated from the main cathode pool. 4 to which it is electrically connected through a resistance 8, and the surface of the main pool contains particles 11 of insulating material, for example alumina. In the example described, the ignition electrode 9 to which the positive impulses are applied by a transformer 10 is connected to the ignition pool directly or through the resistance 8. To avoid time-lag of irregular duration between the formation of the ignition and the transfer of the discharge to the main cathode, the pools are preferably placed close together with an intervening thin strip 2 of insulation. In addition or alternatively, a magnetic field may be established in the discharge device to concentrate the electrons from the ignition pool towards the space between the main cathode and the anode, or an auxiliary anode may be disposed in this space and have applied to it the impulses applied to the ignition electrode. Preferably the particles 11 are connected together and may consist of glass beads strung on wires anchored to the wall of the tube, which may be of glass.
