[Class 38 (ii).] In a discharge device comprising a blocking electrode which is constantly negatively charged with respect to the cathode or the gas filling, the blocking action of the electrode is suspended at any predetermined instant by inundating the electrode with positive ions to reduce the blocking field to a magnitude at which the discharge will be initiated, the said discharge continuing as an unsupported discharge. The device may have an incandescent or a mercury cathode. A mercuryvapour rectifier, inverter &c. is provided with a grid 5, Fig. 2, which is negatively biassed with respect to the cathode by a battery 7 connected thereto through a resistance 8. The positive ions are generated in the neighbourhood of the grid by a high-frequency coil 13, which is located internally or externally of the device, and is connected through a switch to a generator 15. The switch may consist of an insulating disc 20 which is driven by a synchronous motor 24 and contains a contact 21 adapted to complete the high-frequency circuit by connecting together contacts 27, 28 mounted on an adjustably pivoted arm 25. The coil may be replaced by internal or external semi-cylindrical electrodes. In a modification, the electrode 5 is not connected to a source of negative potential, but is externally or internally connected to the cathode either directly or through a resistance. In a further modification, a thin wire electrode 41, Fig. 6, which passes through the electrode 5 is used for generating the positive ions and is energized through a phase shifter or by a transformer 45, the secondary of which is in series with a battery 46 having variable tappings. In another modification, the ions are generated by radiating the electrode, or the gas in the neighbourhood thereof, with R÷ntgen or cathode rays, or with ultra-violet light, or by the introduction of metastable atoms, formed by radiating the gas with light.
