Abstract

217,213. Otto, W. June 6, 1923, [Convention date]. Electric appliances.-In apparatus for medical treatment with high frequency electric currents in which a primary oscillatory circuit is excited by a Wagner interrupter, the secondary winding of a high frequency transformer being connected to the primary circuit, the electrode is separated from the primary oscillatory circuit bv a condenser, or an electric resistance, or a spark or gas gap, so that electrodes of any suitable material, including metal, may be used without risk. As shown in Fig. 1, the condenser, resistance, or gap f may be placed between the primary and secondary coils d, e respectively of a Tesla transformer, the electrode i being joined to the secondary coil e. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 3, the condenser or the like may be inserted between the coil e and the electrode. One form which this modification may assume is shown in Fig. 5, in which the -metal electrode i has an insulating cap o which is inserted into a metal socket m linked to the secondary coil of the transformer. In a further modification the condenser or the like is in the electrode itself, which is made in two parts. In one constructional form of this modification the electrode comprises two metal parts separated by a dielectric plate. In another form, as shown in Fig. 7, the electrode comprises cup-shaped parts i', i<2> fitting on a vacuum tube r, the part i<1> being connected to the secondary coil of the transformer and the part i<2> being joined to the main body of the electrode i. The condenser effect of the tube r may be modified by inserting an electrode, for example a sealed-in wire, at one or both ends. Any of these forms may be further modified by coating the inside of the tube with metal, either over the whole surface or over the zone of one, or both of the parts i<1>, i<2>; alternatively the tube may be filled with mercury, metal filings, graphite, or the like. In a further modification, as shown in Fig. 12, the tube r, which may be coated or filled as described above, has a glass partition u forming the dielectric of a condenser the conductors of which are constituted by the gas in the two compartments of the tube.
