Are and sparkgap apparatus, arrangements of. - In a tube for use as a rectifier, generator of high or low frequency current, or as a frequency charger, an arc discharge is controlled by an electrode in the form of a flat ring around the tube or by a bath of Liquid such as water, the potential of the electrode &c. being maintained periodically at a value sufficient to prevent the formation of the arc. The cathode may consist of mercury or of an incandescent filament. A tube with several anodes and control electrodes may be used with polyphase current. In the rectifier shown in Fig. 3, having a mercury cathode 18, an exciting anode 19, two main anodes 16, 17, and two control electrodes 20, 21, a rotary switch 27 is provided for connecting the control electrodes with either end of a transformer T so as to control the discharge.
