[Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XL] A mercury-arc rectifier comprises a cathode 1 spaced by an insulator 2 from an anode which consists of a plate 3 and a water-cooled jacket 4. A tubular auxiliary electrode 35 is provided with a heater 38, a quartz extension 36 dipping into the cathode, and a nozzle 37 which directs vapour on to the cathode to form the auxiliary arc. The electrode 35 is connected to the supply transformer 9 through a rectifier 8 and a transformer 20, and the heater is energized by a battery 39.
