Abstract

426,902. Converting. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Smede, L. ; 620, East End Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) March 26, 1934, No. 9478. Convention date, May 3, 1933. [Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XL] A discharge device, particularly of the type in which the starting electrode is partly immersed in a solid or liquid cathode, is controlled by an arrangement for charging a condenser and then discharging it through an auxiliary valve and the starting electrode discharge path. In the form shown, the condenser 23 is charged from an A.C. supply through a rectifier 27, this charged condenser is periodically connected between the cathode 5 and starting electrode 9 of the discharge device by means of a grid controlled valve 29. The potential on the grid of this valve 29 consists of an A.C. component superimposed on a D.C. component and by varying the D.C. component the moment of ignition of the main discharge can be varied. The period of discharge of the condenser 23 can be varied by means of resistance 37 in the starting electrode circuit. In order to enable the range of regulation to be increased the A.C. component of grid potential for the valve 29 is obtained from a phase shifting circuit supplied from an additional winding on the transformer 15. The specification states that each electrode of the discharge device 1 may be arranged to operate as an anode or as a cathode. Examples of solid cathodes given are lead, tin, iron and nickel. Examples of suitable materials for the starting electrode are carbon, silicate carbide, boron carbide, boron, silicon boron and boron carbide mixtures and boron and carbon mixtures.
