Abstract

R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-For making short X-ray exposures with the use of a condenser discharge, a suitable potential is applied to a third electrode in the ray-tube in order to bring about an inertia less discharge of the condenser through the ray-tube. As shown in Fig. 1, the condenser 5 supplying the ray-tube 9 is charged through a rectifying valve 4 from a transformer 2 having a regulating resistance 3 in its primary circuit, and a rapid inertialess discharge is provided for by including a spark gap 6 in the ray-tube circuit. Alternatively, a rapid inertialess discharge may be brought about by applying a suitable potential to a third electrode in the ray-tube. The focusing-device 10 may be employed as the third electrode, and a current will flow through the tube only after the potential of this electrode has been raised to a definite value relative to that of the cathode 8. The potential may be applied by a rotary switch or commutator connected to a source of e.m.f. The ray-tube is preferably of the kind described in Specification 286,436.
