374,913. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Kersley, W. K. ; 1606, Randolph Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 20, 1931, No. 5423. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] The area of the focal spot on the anode 2 of the X-ray tube 1 is automatically varied as the space current through the tube and the voltage of the supply 22 vary. A focusing device 11 surrounding the thermionic cathode 6 of the tube 1 is connected to a vacuum tube 27 which is connected in series with the hightension circuit through the transformer 20 and rectifier or translator 21. The voltage drop across the tube 27 determines the negative bias on the device 11 and is controlled by varying the current in the filament 30. A variable resistance 24 varies simultaneously the current in the cathode 6 and in the filament 30 to increase the current through the tube 1 and the area of the focal spot. A transformer 60 increases the current through the filament 30, to increase the focal spot, as the voltage of the supply 22 increases. A variable resistance 33 is included in the circuit of the filament 30 and another may be included in the lead 28. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also an arrangement with the transformer 60 omitted and other automatic focusing arrangements similar to those described in Specification 355,978 as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a). This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
