711,142. Television. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1952 [Feb. 15, 1951], No. 3643/51. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL(c)] A deflecting circuit for a cathode-ray tube in a television receiver comprises an electron discharge tube in the cathode circuit of which is included a coil for focusing the beam of the C.R. tube so that in the event of failure of the deflecting circuit the C.R. tube is defocused. The Figure shows the output stage of a line scanning circuit for a television receiver in which sawtooth deflecting currents are produced in the secondary winding of the output transformer 3. The focusing coil 4 of the C.R. tube is included in the cathode circuit of the discharge tube 1 and is bye-passed at radio-frequencies by capacitor 6 ; the cathode current of the tube 1 is adjusted by means of the variable screen resistor 7 so that the C.R. beam is correctly focused. On failure of the deflecting circuit, due, for example, to failure of the drive to tube 1 or breakdown of capacitor 8, the cathode current of tube 1 changes substantially and the C.R. beam is defocused thus reducing the likelihood of burning of the C.R. tube screen.
