Abstract

444,788. R÷ntgenray apparatus. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Aug. 19, 1935, No. 23278. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] [See also Group XX] A projecting anode tube 14 on a R÷ntgen-ray tube suitable for examining narrow, hollow work-pieces carries the target 16 at its free end and also carries coils 17 or other focusing devices, and means such as a rheostat 18 enables regulation of the focusing effect and so the size of the focal spot on the target 16. The coils 17 may be adjustable, or the tube 14 flexible, and moved to move the focal spot over the target 16. The coils 17 and tube 14 may both be flexible, or the tube 14 may be curved, for introduction into curved work-pieces. X-rays emerge transversely through a thin part of the side wall of the tube 14 ; rays not emerging transversely are intercepted by a slotted screen moved with the tube relatively to the work-piece. The coils 17 may be replaced by electrodes forming focusing lenses. The X-ray tube is mounted by a ball-joint in the wall of a metal casing with the tube 14 projecting and adjustable in position. The casing contains a Villard supply circuit including a condenser and rectifier. To regulate the focusing, individual focusing members may be switched off or reversed. The focusing may be varied with the potential applied to the X-ray tube, as by coupling together mechanically or electrically the devices for regulating the focusing and the tube potential or by feeding the focusing devices from the primary or secondary of the transformer supplying the tube. When the tube is fed with pulsating current, the electrons may be concentrated only when the potential is above a certain value to reduce heating of the target by the generation of soft X-rays at lower potentials ; the focusing devices are then controlled by a synchronous switch or fed from the tube potential through a choking coil with a saturated core, and shutters are arranged inside the tube 14 to intercept cathode rays not proceeding to the focal spot. These shutters and the target end of the tube 14 may be cooled. The tube current may be varied with the focusing by coupling a regulator for the cathode heating current with the focusing regulator.
