Abstract

597,468. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Aug. 21, 1945, No. 21304. Convention date, March 9, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube a diaphragm 11 delimiting the beam 13 is placed beyond the cross-section 6 of the beam which is projected on the picture screen by the electrostatic lens 4, 5 and is adapted to transmit only that part 14 of the electrons diverging from the path of the effective beam which does not directly adjoin the beam. As shown in Fig. 2, the diaphragm is a small ring joined to the cylinder 4 by narrow arms 12. It is found that only the diverging electrons directly adjoining the beam give harmful secondary emission when they strike the end diaphragm 7 of electrode 5, so that the remainder can be allowed to pass without harm. Further, since only a small number of electrons is collected by diaphragm 11, undesirably large fluctuations of the potential of electrode 4 are provided ; what small fluctuation remains can be turned to account by arranging that the resultant change in focal length of lens 4, 5 shall exactly compensate for the axial movement of cross-section 6 during modulation. Pre-concentration is effected by lens 2, 3, electrode 3 being made unitary with electrode 4 to form a long fieldfree tube which absorbs any secondaries emitted by diaphragm 11. The subject-matter is identical with that of Specification 549,476.
