Abstract

640,697. Velocity-modulated tubes. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1945, No. 34493. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] A tube of the type in which the electron beam from cathode 3 and anode 4 passes a first time through a control electrode system 6, 7, 8 in which it is velocity-modulated, is reflected by a brake-field electrode 10 becoming bunched, and passes a second time through the control electrode system to deliver energy to it, is provided with a second brake field electrode 5 between the cathode and control electrode system so that the electrons are passed back into the control electrode system a third, fourth, &c. time so as to deliver more energy to it. The control electrode system. comprises a half-wave control cylinder between two apertured boundary plates 6, 8. In a modification, Fig. 2, (not shown), there are two -cylinders connected in antiphase. A magnetic focusing field may be employed to increase the number of passages of the electrons before they are collected. The beam may be modulated by a grid in front of the cathode. The tuned output circuit 9 may be a Lecher line or an outer conductor surrounding the cylinders and joining their far ends. Specification 640,747 is referred to. The subjectmatter is identical with Figs. 1 and 2 of Specification 558,143. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Figs. 3 and 4 of Specification 558,143. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
