Abstract

578,587. Discharge apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Aug. 12, 1942, No. 11272. Convention date, Aug. 13, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] A velocity-modulated tube with two resonators 13, 14, Fig. 1, has a collector electrode 16 forming part of the metal envelope and coated internally with carbon to reduce secondary emission. Alternatively, a carbon collector electrode may be plated externally with metal to make it vacuum-tight. The collector is conical in form and a transverse magnetic field from coil 26 deflects the primary electrons on to the sloping sides, and also deflects secondary electrons away from the suppressor grids 21, 22. These grids, as well as the modulating and output grids 17, 18, 19, 20, are also coated with, or wholly of, carbon to reduce secondary emission ; a metal grid formed of hairpins 23, Fig. 2, with unequal legs welded into a ring 24, may be coated with carbon; or a casting of similar shape in cellulose may be subsequently carbonized.
