Abstract

637,463. Velocity-modulated tubes ; inductive output tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. July 15, 1947, No. 18831. Convention date, June 28, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge tube of the electrongrouping type contains an electron interceptor electrode in the path of the beam to prevent electrons between longitudinal electron concentrations in the beam from interacting with the energy-extraction field. In the klystron shown in Fig. 1 the electrons from the annular cathode 25 are focused on the disc 18 in the centre of the grid 16 at the end of the drift tube. Electrons in the bunches spread out, owing to mutual repulsion, and pass through the grid whilst electrons between the bunches are intercepted. The disc 18 is joined by a metal rod 21 to the grid at the other end of the. drift tube to assist cooling ; the grid may be as shown in Fig. 3, the radial metal slats 19 being crimped to allow for thermal expansion. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the envelope has a re-entrant portion 45 having a flat face 46 which acts as an interceptor for the electrons ; the tube 45 also serves to conduct heat away from the face 46. The bunches may also be formed by density modulation. Specifications 523,712, 548,725 and 605,257 are referred to.
