Abstract

586,148. Velocity-modulated tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., FREMLIN, J. H., and FOULKES, C. H. Jan. 9, 1942, No. 382. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron velocitymodulated discharge tube the resonating system within the tube is formec by grids. A cathode 5 Fig. 2, surrounded by a control grid 1 and accelerating grid 2 projects a stream through the grids 3,4; a shield 6 behind the cathode absorbs electrons flowing this way and an electrode 7 reflects electrons back through the grids 3, 4. The grids 3, 4 form a resonating system which modulates the electron stream at one gap and receives energy from the modulated stream at the other gap, the distance within the grid 4 forming a drift space. The grids 3, 4 are connected to a trifilar Lecher wire system. In a modification, the grid 3 is replaced by two grids 3A, 3B, Fig. 4 ; the reflector electrode 7 is approximately cylindrical and practically surrounds these grids. The grids 3A, 3B are formed by winding on supports 22, 23 in the usual manner and cutting away one side of each grid.. The pair of wires 22, 23 are carried up to connect to a two-wire Lecher system ; or only one of each pair may be used for this connection. The grid 4 is at constant potential. The electrodes are held between mica spacers.
