Abstract

560,959. Electron -oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1942, No. 15291. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device has a cathode. 11 for supplying a stream of electrons arid means for cyclically varying the velocity of the electrons and means employing alternating radial electrical fields for directing the electrons on to different collectors 15 and 16 in accordance with their differing velocities. The electron stream from the cathode after passing a grid 13 passes through electrodes 17 and 18, a gap 21 in an input resonant cavity 20 coinciding with the space between the electrodes. The electrodes 17 and 18 are connected by leads 37 and 38 to the inner wall of the cavity 20-and an extension 19 from electrode 17 projects into electrode 18. An alternating radial electrostatic field is thus set up in the latter which directs the faster electrons on to collector 16 and the slower on to collector 15. These collectors are connected with the output'resonant cavity 22 and a sliding connection 23 permits tuning. A third resonant cavity 25 is provided between cavities 20 and 22 to facilitate tuning adjustment. In an alternative construction, the collectors 15 and 16 may be connected to an output circuit formed by a shielded Lecher wire system, the wires-being made telescopic for turiing purposes.
