Abstract
561,910. Electron oscillators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1942, Nos. 15199 and 15200. Convention dates, Oct. 30, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron discharge device having electrodes for generating a modulated stream of electrons and for collecting the stream, the output electrode 16 comprises a number of segments surrounding the path of the stream and separated by gaps parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stream and means are provided to cause the electrons to travel in helical paths within the output electrode past the gaps between the segments. The output circuit comprises conductors 22 joined to the segments and provided with a conductive plunger 23 movable in a shield 24 to connect them at a variable point for tuning purposes. A coupling loop 25 connected to a utilisation circuit extends through the plunger. The shield 24 has tubular extensions to shield the discharge tube. Electrons from the cathode 11 pass through a grid 12 and then, if desired, through a velocity modulating arrangement involving a resonant cavity tank circuit 33 as shown. The stream then becomes subject to a radial electrostatic field due to an electrode 18 and also to a magnetic field due to electromagnet 26 and the electrons are thus caused to follow helical paths through the output electrode 16 before being collected on electrode 13. If the device is being used as a mixer, an input signal may be introduced by a loop 21 to the transmission system 19 connected to the grid 12 while the local oscillator voltage may be introduced by loop 37 projecting into the resonant cavity 33.
