Abstract

592,493. Velocity modulated tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. April 21, 1944, No. 7488. Convention date, April 15, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] In high-frequency discharge apparatus an electron stream is compressed axially between a signal input region and a signal output region by means of a retarding field so that electron groups resulting from variation of electron velocity are more closely spaced near the output region than near the input region. The electron stream time through the input region is a full cycle or more whereas the time through the output region is much shorter. In the apparatus shown, a cathode 12 is mounted on a slotted sleeve 22 to reduce heat leakage. Spaced along the path of the electron stream are a control grid 14 and a screen grid 16. An input cavity resonator 36 is coupled to the cathode 12 and the grid 14, while an output resonator 38 is coupled to the screen 16 and the anode 18. Blocking condensers 37 and 39 are provided so that steady potential differences may be maintained between electrodes. A strong retarding field is maintained between grids 14 and 16 to produce the compressing effect desired. A steady retarding field may also be maintained across the input region itself. One or more space charge controlling grids may also be interposed in the drift spaces 15. Specification 516,750 and U.S.A. Specification 2,240,183 are referred to.
